Now when Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples,
he went on from there to teach and proclaim his message
in their cities.
2
When John heard in prison what the Messiah* was doing,
he sent word by his* disciples 3and said to him, ‘Are
you the one who is to come, or are we to wait for another?’
4Jesus answered them, ‘Go and tell John what you hear
and see: 5the blind receive their sight, the lame walk,
the lepers* are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are
raised, and the poor have good news brought to them.
6And blessed is anyone who takes no offence at me.’

As they went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds
about John: ‘What did you go out into the wilderness
to look at? A reed shaken by the wind? 8What then did
you go out to see? Someone* dressed in soft robes? Look,
those who wear soft robes are in royal palaces. 9What
then did you go out to see? A prophet?* Yes, I tell
you, and more than a prophet. 10This is the one about
whom it is written, “See, I am sending my messenger
ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.”
11Truly
I tell you, among those born of women no one has arisen
greater than John the Baptist; yet the least in the
kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12From the days
of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven
has suffered violence,* and the violent take it by force.
13For all the prophets and the law prophesied until
John came; 14and if you are willing to accept it, he
is Elijah who is to come. 15Let anyone with ears* listen!
16
‘But to what will I compare this generation? It
is like children sitting in the market-places and calling
to one another,
17 “We played the flute for you,
and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not
mourn.”
18For John came neither eating nor drinking,
and they say, “He has a demon”; 19the Son of Man came
eating and drinking, and they say, “Look, a glutton
and a drunkard, a friend of tax-collectors and sinners!”
Yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds.’*
1.耶稣吩咐完了十二个门徒，就离开那里，往各城去传道教训人。
2.约翰在监里听见基督所作的事，就打发两个门徒去，
3.问他说，那将要来的是你麽，还是我们等候别人呢。 4.耶稣回答说，你们去，把所听见所看见的事告诉约翰。 5.就是瞎子看见，瘸子行走，长大麻疯的洁净，聋子听见。死人复活，穷人有福音传给他们。
6.凡不因我跌倒的，就有福了。
7.他们走的时候，耶稣就对众人讲论约翰说，你们从前出到旷野，是要看什么呢，要看风吹动的芦苇麽。
8.你们出去，到底是要看什么，要看穿细软衣服的人麽，那穿细软衣服的人，是在王宫里。
9.你们出去，究竟是为什么，是要看先知麽。我告诉你们，是的，他比先知大多了。
10.经上记着说，我要差遣我的使者在你面前，豫备道路。所说的就是这个人。
11.我实在告诉你们，凡妇人所生的，没有一个兴起来大过施洗约翰的。然而天国里最小的，比他还大。 12.从施洗约翰的时候到如今，天国是努力进入的，努力的人就得着了。
13.因为众先知和律法说豫言，到约翰为止。
14.你们若肯领受，这人就是应当来的以利亚。
15.有耳可听的，就应当听。
16.我可用什么比这世代呢。好像孩童坐在街市上，招呼同伴，说，
17.我们向你们吹笛，你们不跳舞。我们向你们举哀，你们不捶胸。
18.约翰来了，也不吃，也不喝，人就说他是被鬼附着的。
19.人子来了，也吃，也喝，人又说他是贪食好酒的人，是税吏罪人的朋友。但智慧之子，总以智慧为是。（有古卷作但智慧在行为上就显为是） |

The disciples of John reported all these things to him.
So John summoned two of his disciples 19and sent them
to the Lord to ask, ‘Are you the one who is to come,
or are we to wait for another?’ 20When the men had
come to him, they said, ‘John the Baptist has sent
us to you to ask, “Are you the one who is to come,
or are we to wait for another?” ’ 21Jesus* had just
then cured many people of diseases, plagues, and evil
spirits, and had given sight to many who were blind.
22And he answered them, ‘Go and tell John what you
have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight,
the lame walk, the lepers* are cleansed, the deaf hear,
the dead are raised, the poor have good news brought
to them. 23And blessed is anyone who takes no offence
at me.’

When John’s messengers had gone, Jesus* began to speak
to the crowds about John:* ‘What did you go out into
the wilderness to look at? A reed shaken by the wind?
25What then did you go out to see? Someone* dressed
in soft robes? Look, those who put on fine clothing
and live in luxury are in royal palaces. 26What then
did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and
more than a prophet. 27This is the one about whom it
is written, “See, I am sending my messenger ahead of
you, who will prepare your way before you.”
28I
tell you, among those born of women no one is greater
than John; yet the least in the kingdom of God is greater
than he.’ 29(And all the people who heard this, including
the tax-collectors, acknowledged the justice of God,*
because they had been baptized with John’s baptism.
30But by refusing to be baptized by him, the Pharisees
and the lawyers rejected God’s purpose for themselves.)
31
‘To what then will I compare the people of this generation,
and what are they like? 32They are like children sitting
in the market-place and calling to one another, “We
played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we
wailed, and you did not weep.”
33For
John the Baptist has come eating no bread and drinking
no wine, and you say, “He has a demon”; 34the Son
of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, “Look,
a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax-collectors
and sinners!” 35Nevertheless, wisdom is vindicated
by all her children.’
18.约翰的门徒把这些事都告诉约翰。
19.他便叫了两个门徒来，打发他们到主那里去，说，那将要来的是你麽，还是我们等候别人呢。
20.那两个人来到耶稣那里，说，施洗的约翰打发我们来问你，那将要来的是你麽，还是我们等候别人呢。 21.正当那时候，耶稣治好了许多有疾病的，受灾患的，被恶鬼附着的。又开恩叫好些瞎子能看见。
22.耶稣回答说，你们去把所看见所听见的事告诉约翰。就是瞎子看见，瘸子行走，长大麻疯的洁净，聋子听见，死人复活，穷人有福音传给他们。
23.凡不因我跌倒的，就有福了。
24.约翰所差来的人既走了，耶稣就对众人讲论约翰说，你们从前出去到旷野，是要看什么呢。要看风吹动的芦苇麽。
25.你们出去到底是要看什么。要看穿细软衣服的人麽。那穿华丽衣服宴乐度日的人，是在王宫里。
26.你们出去究竟是要看什么。要看先知麽。我告诉你们，是的，他比先知大多了。
27.经上记着说，我要差遣我的使者在你前面，豫备道路。所说的就是这个人。
28.我告诉你们，凡妇人所生的，没有一个大过约翰的。然而神国里最小的比他还大。
29.众百姓和税吏，既受过约翰的洗，听见这话，就以神为义。
30.但法利赛人和律法师，没有受过约翰的洗，竟为自己废弃了神的旨意。二十九三十两节或作众百姓和税吏听见了约翰的话就受了他的洗便以神为义但法利赛人和律法师不受约翰的洗，竟为自己废弃了神的旨意。 31.主又说，这样，我可用什么比这世代的人呢。他们好像什么呢。

33.施洗的约翰来，不吃饼，不喝酒。你们说他是被鬼附着的。

After this Jesus and his disciples went into the Judean
countryside, and he spent some time there with them
and baptized. 23John also was baptizing at Aenon near
Salim because water was abundant there; and people kept
coming and were being baptized? 24John, of course, had
not yet been thrown into prison.
25
Now a discussion about purification arose between John’s
disciples and a Jew.* 26They came to John and said to
him, ‘Rabbi, the one who was with you across the Jordan,
to whom you testified, here he is baptizing, and all
are going to him.’ 27John answered, ‘No one can receive
anything except what has been given from heaven. 28You
yourselves are my witnesses that I said, “I am not
the Messiah,* but I have been sent ahead of him.”
29
He who has the bride is the bridegroom. The friend of
the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly
at the bridegroom’s voice. For this reason my joy has
been fulfilled. 30He must increase, but I must decrease.’*
31
The one who comes from above is above all; the one who
is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks about
earthly things. The one who comes from heaven is above
all. 32He testifies to what he has seen and heard, yet
no one accepts his testimony. 33Whoever has accepted
his testimony has certified* this, that God is true.
34He whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for
he gives the Spirit without measure. 35The Father loves
the Son and has placed all things in his hands. 36Whoever
believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever disobeys
the Son will not see life, but must endure God’s wrath.
22.这事以后，耶稣和门徒到了犹太地，在那里居住施洗。
23.约翰在靠近撒冷的哀嫩也施洗，因为那里水多。众人都去受洗。
24.那时约翰还没有下在监里。
25.约翰的门徒，和一个犹太人辩论洁净的礼。
26.就来见约翰说，拉比，从前同你在约但河外，你所见证的那位，现在施洗，众人都往他那里去。
27.约翰说，若不是从天上赐的，人就不能得什么。
28.我曾说，我不是基督，是奉差遣在他前面的，你们可以给我作见证。
29.娶新妇的，就是新郎。新郎的朋友站着听见新郎的声音就甚喜乐。故此我这喜乐满足了。
30.他必兴旺，我必衰微。
31.从天上来的，是在万有之上。从地上来的，是属乎地，他所说的，也是属乎地从天上来的，是在万有之上。
32.他将所见所闻的见证出来，只是没有人领受他的见证。
33.那领受他见证的，就印上印，证明神是真的。
34.神所差来的，就说神的话。因为神赐圣灵给他，是没有限量的。
35.父爱子，已将万有交在他手里。
36.信子的人有永生。不信子的人得不着永生，（原文作不得见永生）神的震怒常在他身上。
